Kids are naturally compassionate, born with an innate love for all living things. It is through cultural conditioning that our respect for other creatures is distorted to conform to the norm. Most people unconsciously accept these double standards and never questions their validity. But some kids refuse to accept their parents rhetoric of love one and eat the other and choose to take a stand for what they know in their heart to be right.
Here are three young activists who will inspire you and your family to make a positive change for your health, the planet, and the animals:
Angelina (IG: Angelina for The Animals)
10-year-old Angelina grew up like most kids in New Jersey eating hot dogs on the fourth of July and Turkey on Thanksgiving. But after watching the documentary Earthlings, Angelina saw the truth about where animal products come from. Through tears, she told her mother she did not want to be the cause of their suffering. She started watching more documentaries in order to educate herself about the health, environmental and ethical impacts of animal products. Armed with the truth, she quickly became an active member of her local Anonymous for the Voiceless and Save Movement chapters along with her mother and younger sister. She is concerned with the plight of all animals and is committed to raising awareness through demonstrations, leafleting, public speaking and any other form of activism at her disposal. She speaks from her heart and it is impossible to remain unmoved by her commitment to creating a vegan world.
Genesis (IG: A Vegan Child’s Journey)
From a very young age, Genesis has asked her parents the tough questions about where her food comes from. At age four, she went vegetarian after asking her parents about the origins of the hamburger on her plate. At age six while watching her mother breastfeed her younger brother, she asked where the milk in her fridge came from. It was at this point her mother knew the whole family would be going vegan. For Genesis, going vegan was a simple decision to avoid harming animals. Her commitment to spreading this message of compassion has led her to various forms of activism. She has picketed circuses, been on local news stations, created a foundation for animals in need and was the youngest TEDx speaker ever. She even spoke on her local council about water conservation during droughts. She noticed everyone was advocating for shorter showers but failing to mention how water-intensive animal agriculture is. She is socially and politically active in a way few can claim to be. Not only is Genesis strong mentally, but she is also strong physically as she plays basketball, soccer and was awarded MVP on her football team. She is an extremely well-rounded young person who inspires everyone she meets. Whatever she does next, we know that she will pursue it with all her heart.
Evan (IG: VeganEvan)
At age 5, Evan showed that he is wise beyond his years by becoming vegan. The discovery that meat came from animals came as a complete shock to Evan. He wondered why humans would kill and eat an animal if they did not have to. Today, Evan operates on the basic idea that if you do not need to kill a living animal to be alive, why would you? Beyond the plight of farmed animals, Evan is vegan because he wants to protect the Earth and all of its inhabitants. He sees that the world his generation is set to inhabit is cruel, but through activism, he is determined to create a more compassionate planet for all. He leads by example showing kids and adults alike that you can thrive on a vegan diet. Evan is often invited to speak at vegan festivals and vigils to inspire other activists to never give up. He also has a YouTube channel where he talks about many different issues from a vegan perspective. His passion for the vegan lifestyle is contagious and it is hard to lose hope when you hear the conviction in his voice.
These young activists are taking matters into their own hands and creating the world they wish to see. They refuse to sit back and hope someone else does something because they realize they are someone and they have the power to do something about it. They have inspired countless people to stop and consider the implication of their purchasing power. They have also inspired many vegans to do more than simply eat plants and get active for the animals. With passionate kids like Angelina, Genesis, and Evan, the world is in good hands.
