When the wildly popular show Great British Bake Off announced they would be airing a Vegan Baking Challenge on their October 9th episode, fans quickly took to Twitter to express their outrage and apparent disgust.
One fan says: “Having a vegan week on #GBBO is truly an insult to all that is good about baking. Butter, milk, cream and eggs is what baking is all about!”
Some even went so far as to say they would boycott watching the show during the vegan week!
The passion with which people oppose this vegan week is startling. It appears that they feel vegans are disrespecting the sanctity of baking by avoiding the use of animal secretions. What they fail to see is that delicious baked goods can be concocted without the need for animal products. It is 2018 and there are endless substitutes for eggs, milk, and butter. With so many choices, it begs the question: if we don’t need to use animals to make amazing desserts, then why would we?
Thankfully, there is also a wealth of support backing this announcement, with many vowing to tune in for the first time to watch contestants try their hand at vegan baking. The show is supposed to be a challenge after all, so why not also challenge the audience to see that baking and veganism are not antonyms.
This is admittedly a great way to help normalize veganism and bring it into the mainstream consciousness. We hope in the future The Great British Bake Off will go a step further and challenge their participants to create raw vegan desserts. As it stands, we are happy to remain the reigning champions in the raw vegan arena.
